What are Australian Apprenticeships?

Australian Apprenticeships combine practical work with structured training to give young people a nationally recognised qualification and the experience they need to establish a career.

Australian Apprenticeships combine the former apprenticeship and traineeship system under one banner. Traditionally, apprenticeships took three to four years to complete and traineeships lasted for one to two years. Australian Apprenticeships are 'competency based' meaning it may be possible for an Australian Apprentice to complete their training sooner if they have reached the skill level required.

The formal training for Australian Apprenticeships has been designed by industry, for industry. The training can be delivered on-the-job, off-the-job, or a combination of both. All training is delivered and assessed by accredited training providers.

It is even possible for a young person to start an Australian Apprenticeship while still at school. School-based Australian Apprenticeships allow students to start an Australian Apprenticeship during their final years of secondary education.
