Alex Watts - CVGT Appretnice Wins GOLD at Workskills

24th Feb, 2010

Great News!!

CVGT's 3rd Year Apprentice Alex Watts won gold at the regional Worldskills competition in the carpentry section.

Worldskills is Australia’s largest and most prestigious trade and skills competition. It’s a competition for young Australian apprentices and VET students interested in challenging their skills and ability against other young trade or skilled people in their area, the nation and the world.

Alex now has the opportunity to compete at the Worldskills National competition held in Brisbane on May 7, 8 and 9 and if successful will be flown to London to compete on the world stage.

“Competing in the Worldskills competitions gives you the chance to get noticed at a regional, national and international level. This competition is great for future employment prospects. It’s a good learning opportunity, providing great experience working individually and as a team,”  Randall Blakemore,CVGT’s Victorian Regional Manager of Training says.

“To go on and represent their training organisation and employer overseas is a feather in their cap. They have the opportunity to travel, meet other students from across Australia and to have the experience of a lifetime.

“It gives them a chance to stand out from the crowd, maximise their employment, training and higher education options - whether it be an apprenticeship, traineeship or degree.

“Alex’s win shows his talent and the high quality training CVGT provides.”

For Alex, building has always been part of his life.

“My father is a builder and I used to help him when I was little,” he says.

“CVGT helped me through the competition and continues to provide one-to-one coaching in preparation for the Worldskills event at Brisbane.”

Alex also received excellent training from his father and boss, Chris, who has been in the building industry in Castlemaine for 23 years and passes on his skills to other apprentices as well.

“I’m proud of what Alex has achieved. It was his choice at 16 to go into carpentry. He’s got a great attitude and can think three or four steps ahead in the job.”
